When Sophie first proposed to travel around for a long time with only a backpack instead of the standard two-week beach honeymoon, Manolo thought she was crazy. But then he said: "Why not?" And so after their beautiful wedding on July 1, 2017, they packed up their appartment, put their stuff in storage and left for St. Petersburg with nothing but two 10-kg backpacks and a big hunger for adventure.

It takes about 3 years of daily visits by park rangers before gorillas get used to the presence of humans. Gorillas that are not used to humans will flee at their sight or charge and attack humans to protect their babies, while habituated gorillas will acknowledge the presence of the humans and then carry on with whatever they were doing. Studies have shown that gorilla populations in areas where there is ecotourism tend to do better. The money you pay to go see gorillas in the wild serves for the preservation of the Parks as well as to pay the salaries of the local park rangers and gorilla trackers. This not only keep poachers from killing gorillas for bush meat or hunting trophies, it also helps with preserving the habitat of the gorillas as unsustainable logging, mining and oil and gas development is one of the greatest threats to these amazing creatures. The only way to keep the gorillas alive is by ensuring the people living on the outskirts of the Parks have decent incomes. Mighty jungle. These are not trees, but lianas. They encircle trees and use them to grow tall around them. Since the last 20 years, the Ba'aka have gradually started coming out of the forest. They now live in a village outside of the forest and interact with the local people around them. They still go back to the forest occasionally to hunt and gather food, but the forest doesn't provide enough food to survive of anymore for all of them.
